Covid-19 Help & Advice

Following the outbreak of Covid-19, the surgery has made a number of adjustments to the building and to our working ways to enable us to continue to provide healthcare to our patients in the safest way possible. Here are some of the ways we have changed our ways of working and what to expect when visiting the surgery.

Symptoms & Advice on when to contact the surgery

The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:

> a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

> a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

> a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus:

> Stay at home (self-isolate) – do not leave your home or have visitors. Anyone you live with, and anyone in your support bubble, must also self-isolate.

> Get a test – get a test to check if you have coronavirus as soon as possible. Anyone you live with, and anyone in your support bubble, should also get a test if they have symptoms. Order a test online or by dialling 119.

Why haven’t I had my vaccination appointment yet when others in a similar position as me have?

This could be for a number of reasons.

All surgeries are following guidance working our way through cohorts of patients as guided by Welsh Government. The way surgeries deliver their vaccinations may differ; some choosing to send to the mass vaccination centers or local vaccination centers, and some choosing to deliver within surgery. This may have slight knock on effects on timescales.

In addition, each cohort of patients are made up of 100s of patients and therefore it is not possible to vaccinate all of the cohort at one time. Patients will receive appointments on differing dates.

Distribution of vaccinations has also been challenging. The HB has worked tirelessly to distribute vaccinations fairly and as quickly as possible, however we have had issues whereby a number of vaccinations have been allocated but then reduced due to issues beyond the HBs control. This has had a knock on effect on the booking of patients.

We have contacted some patients over the phone, of which a number of patients have been uncontactable.

How do I know that I have not been forgotten?

Surgeries have the ability to search their entire practice population, breaking down by demographic. The mass vaccination centres have access to patient lists in all surgeries.

If the mass vaccination centre books a patient in for a clinic we are notified retrospectively - there can be a delay in between the booking and the surgery being notified.

There should be very little to no risk that a patient will have been forgotten. Patients must make themselves aware of which cohort they fall under and adjust their expectation of timescales for vaccination accordingly.

Can I get my vaccination any sooner?

It is not possible to expedite your appointment. All surgeries are working our way through the cohorts as advised by Welsh Government. Please do not contact the surgery to ask if you can have your vaccine faster.

How will I be notified?

You will either be contacted by the surgery or receive a letter with an appointment date in a Mass Vaccination Centre (MVC) – the closest MVC to Rysseldene is Venue Cymru.

What if I have call screening?

As a surgery we have not had any issues contacting patients with call screening.

What if I miss the call?

We will try to contact a patient at different times throughout the day and will leave messages where possible. If we are unsuccessful at contacting a patient on numerous occasions, we will write to the patient inviting to ring in.

I am led to believe the mass vaccinations generally write to patients rather than contact over the phone.

What if I’ve not had any contact with my GP in some time?

You remain with your GP surgery until you register with a different practice. At that point your previous surgery is notified and you are deducted. If you have not had contact with the surgery for some time, it may be worth checking your contact details are still correct. Please do this by emailing

Eligibility for Vaccine & Further Information

As the risk of mortality from COVID-19 increases with age, prioritization is primarily based on age.

This priority list is as follows:

  1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
  2. all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers
  3. all those 75 years of age and over
  4. all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals (shielders)
  5. all those 65 years of age and over
  6. all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
  7. all those 60 years of age and over
  8. all those 55 years of age and over
  9. all those 50 years of age and over

Telephone Consultations

We have moved to a telephone triage appointment system whereby calls are triaged by a clinician in the first instance. A large number of consultation can be dealt with over the telephone as well as using video consultation. If the clinician feels you need to a face to face appointment, they will book this direct from the initial consultation. Please see our appointments tab for more information.

Adjustments To The Building

We have made a number of adjustments to Westend Medical Centre in partnership with Rhoslan Surgery;

> We have introduced an intercom system to enable us to close our front door in order to control the number of patients in the building at one time & to encourage telephoning and emailing the surgery to correspond in order to protect all patients and our staff.

> The surgery ask that wherever possible you visit the surgery by yourself. We understand that this is not possible for patients with disabilites or children.

> The surgeries have limited the number of chairs in our waiting room to ensure 2m social distancing is observed. We ask that you observe social distancing at all times whilst you are visiting.

> Antibacterial Gel is placed at the front door. We ask that you use this on entering the building and before you exit and use our hand washing facilities when necessary.

> We ask that only one patient uses the stairwell and lift in the waiting area at one time. This does not apply to carers and a parent attending with a child.


Cleaning & Personal Protective Equipment

All clinicans seeing patients in the surgery will wear Personal Protective Equipment. After a patient has visited, the clincian will clean sufaces in the room that the patient has had contact with ready for the next patient visiting. Patients that have symptoms relating to Covid-19 will be seen in the Local Assessment Centre.
